and the countdown begins...
I'm sitting here at my desk, on a typical rainy, windy Portland evening with stacks of papers to write, and a seemingly unending list of chapters in my Biology book to read. Unfortunately for my study habits, I can't seem to concentrate. We are all set to leave for Asia in 25 days! 25! My planner is full of lists of things I still have to accomplish (shots included... boo) in the midst of finishing up my classes for the term. As most of you know, this will be my first trip out of North America. I spent spring break in Cabo once (epic) and then another in Whistler, BC (also epic) but have yet to actually go somewhere that requires a visa or a passport stamp. So, as you may imagine, I'm full of emotions ranging from excitement to nervousness. The only thing I'm not looking forward to is the quick 15 hour trip across the Pacific. If you've ever flown with me, or sat in a car with me for more than a few hours, you know that 15 hours is going to be rough. Aside from that, it's going to be quite the adventure!
A (rough) itinerary:
June 14 - San Francisco to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Vietnam cities include: Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, Can Tho
June 27 - Siemreab, Cambodia
Destinations include: Angkor Wat and other temples!
July 1 - Ko Samui, Thailand
Pending political issues, destinations include: Ko Samui, Ko Tao
July 10 - Katmandu, Nepal
Activities: volunteering in a medical clinic in rural Nepal
I've been spending my study breaks researching hostels and restaurants and all I have to say is WOW! Not only are they much nicer than I expected, but they are much, more more inexpensive. We're talking $8 for a room that looks equivalent to something you'd find at a Holiday Inn. Not too bad, eh? The food worries me, as I'm not partial to spiciness, but I suppose I'll just have to buck up and deal with it. Anyway, dinner is calling my name, as are the books. We're hoping to have access to some sort of computer and internet connection to keep this updated regularly over there. Hopefully we can include some pictures as well! Stay tuned.
